The visit of wonderful human Matthew Smith {aka Whale} to Karuizawa reminded me of the need to welcoming more "givers" and rejecting all "takers" in my life.

Put a Whale in Your Life

Through a common friend (looking at you, Elliot) and some magic, Matthew found Mundo Mendo and it took him just a few seconds and very little convincing to become a member. As I always receive new family with an email and a thank you, he immediately replied and told me he was going to be in Japan with his wife in a few weeks' time. Of course we could have lunch—I do it often, but especially with my members when they are in Tokyo. And we did meet, and it was so fun. We became instant friends. So much so that in their next visit a few months later they came to Karuizawa and stayed in our home.
This is a story about that visit but also about welcoming good people into your life. About rejecting the takers and embracing the givers.

Matthew is a big giver, and for that I am grateful.
